eDCSD Online Mission and Vision for Mindfulness:

eDCSD Online has a multi-faceted focus when it comes to student learning and development.  We have developed a plan using Mindfulness to teach our students coping skills to help them through life. Mindfulness allows people to take time to focus on the moment, for example, their current academic needs, social/emotional needs and development, and personal life.

What is Mindfulness?

“Mindfulness is the basic human ability to be fully present, aware of where we are and what we’re doing, and not overly reactive or overwhelmed by what’s going on around us.

While mindfulness is something we all naturally possess, it’s more readily available to us when we practice on a daily basis.

Whenever you bring awareness to what you’re directly experiencing via your senses, or to your state of mind via your thoughts and emotions, you’re being mindful. And there’s growing research showing that when you train your brain to be mindful, you’re actually remodeling the physical structure of your brain”.  Mindful.org

Mindful Activities:

Mindful Drawing

Mindful Drawing is an activity that promotes focus and attention in kids while teaching them how to be more in tune with their own internal emotional state. The kids are all given paper and something to draw with, like crayons or colored pencils, and instrumental music is played for them. The kids are instructed to draw what they feel as they listen to music. Kids must sit silently as they draw, focused on listening to the music and paying attention to how the music makes them feel and what the music brings to mind for them.) Students then share their drawings in small groups. Sharing builds confidence as well as listening skills and teaches kids how to support and encourage one another. Encourage students to share compliments.

Debrief and Reflection: How did you feel during the mindful drawing time? Do you feel relaxed and ready for your day? When else would it be helpful to do a mindful drawing?
